Need a compass to find your way through the complexity of Human Rights and Intercultural Education? Well, such a compass really exists, the "Compass" website of the Directorate of Youth and Sport of the Council of Europe.

Authors/Editors

The website is based on the Human Rights Education Youth Programme which has been initiated by the Council of Europe in 2000 in order to bring human rights and intercultural education into the mainstream of youth work.

Description of Contents

It - as is pointed out in its the "About us"-section - provides access to four educational manuals, allowing users to take full advantage of the possibilites offered by the Internet, namely links across chapters or the chance to exchange experiences and provide feedback to others. The four manuals are:

  • COMPASS, the manual on HRE for young people, which has been designed as the main tool for Human Rights Education. COMPASS indicates and suggests different ways and directions for HRE in formal and non-formal educational settings.

  • The "All different – all Equal” Education Pack, which is a manual that provides youth workers, trainers and group leaders with ideas, resources, methods and activities for informal intercultural education with young people.

  • DOmino which is a practical manual on how to use peer-group education as a means of fighting racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism and intolerance, and

  • "Alien '93" which was the very first resource book on combating racism and xenophobia, published by the Directorate of Youth and Sport.

Compass

is organised in the following way:

Chapter 1: Familiarises the reader with what the authors mean by human rights education.

Chapter 2: Consists of a collection of 49 activities of different levels of complexity, which cover different topics and address different types of rights. Cross-referencing is given to relevant follow-up activities in Alien 93 ; DOmino and the Education Pack.

Chapter 3: "Taking action", contains ideas and tips for those that would like to be more active in promoting human rights.

Chapter 4: Provides essential information about human rights and international standards and documents.

Chapter 5: Supplementary background information about the topics.

The appendices: Contain essential information on and links to legal documents.

Education Pack

The education pack consists of two parts. Part A is a general introduction to the current situation in Europe and argues for the introduction of intercultural education. Part B provides a toolbox of methods and activities to use with young people in intercultural education. Following a description of the overall methodology, you will find a range of activities which are based firmly on group work and participation.

Although the education pack has been especially designed for young people, it and the activities proposed can be adapted for other age groups in informal education settings as well.

DOmino

The intention of DOmino is to give some assistance to those working or planning to work with young people on peer group education projects. The different sections of DOmino contain some theoretical background on peer group education as well as different project descriptions, methods, quotes and stories from young people.

Alien 93'

provides an overview of work carried out to combat racism and xenophobia by the various youth organisations cooperating with the Council of Europe.

The Compass website - and especially the Compass Manual on Human Rights Education and the "Education Pack" dealing with intercultural education - undoubtedly constitutes an invaluable source for all teachers searching for concepts, ideas or methods for their seminars. Highly recommendable!
